Cuddy & Feder Partner, William S. Null, secured final approval from the White Plains Common Council for an expansion of White Plains Hospital that will enhance its facilities in a 10-story building to be constructed adjacent to the legacy hospital.

The Hospital Expansion will include doubling the size of the emergency department, adding multiple new operating rooms, and increasing the patient bed count from 292 to 436, which will provide 144 new private patient rooms.

The new building will rise on a parcel that had contained the Hospital’s Davis Avenue garage, which land is bounded by S. Lexington Avenue, East Post Road, Davis Avenue, and Maple Avenue. Demolition work is almost complete, and an interim parking lot has been completed to the west of S. Lexington Avenue. The Hospital Expansion will also involve the demolition of the existing medical office building at 170 Maple Avenue in about two years.

To accommodate the new entry to the Hospital from Maple Avenue, the City of White Plains previously approved the discontinuance of the segment of Davis Avenue north of Maple Avenue extending to E. Post Road. The removal of this roadway segment will allow the expansion to connect to the legacy hospital building at-grade and along E. Post Road. A new entrance lobby will be constructed facing Maple Avenue.

The Hospital’s existing emergency room in its current main building was designed for 40,000 patient visits a year and currently serves approximately 80,000 patients annually. Mr. Null advised the City that the Hospital has no choice but to build now to accommodate the region’s healthcare needs and to address the volume of patients seeking the high-quality patient care for which the Hospital is known. Among the recognitions awarded the Hospital, it recently received its third consecutive 5-Star designation from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

Commissioner of Planning, Christopher Gomez, recently advised the Planning Board that the City and the White Plains Urban Renewal Agency are coordinating to construct a new parking garage on the northerly side of East Post Road, across from the hospital that could serve the Brookfield Commons, the Hospital, and the public. The garage is being designed with spaces designated for use by people going to the emergency room across the street. In the interim, valet parking services at the Hospital have been doubled to serve patients and visitors.

Mr. Null volunteers and serves as Chairman of the Board of Directors of White Plains Hospital.
